The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) organised the maiden Nigeria–Ghana Bilateral Meeting on Trafficking in Persons (TIP) and Smuggling of Migrants (SOM) in Abuja from 11th to 13th May 2026. The meeting served as the first formal platform for both countries to initiate a structured process of cooperation aimed at developing a bilateral framework or Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to combat trafficking in persons and migrant smuggling. The event brought together representatives from key government institutions, law enforcement agencies, immigration services and civil society organisations from both Ghana and Nigeria to discuss trafficking trends, legal frameworks, operational challenges, victim protection, and mechanisms for enhanced cooperation.
The delegation led by Mr. John Kwasi Boakye, Director of the Consular and Humanitarian Affairs Bureau also paid a courtesy call on the Acting High Commissioner of the Ghana High Commission, Dr. Mrs. Gladys Mansa Yawa Feddy Akyea on Thursday, 14th May, 2026 at 11:00 a.m.
