President John Dramani Mahama on Sunday, 14th December, 2025, participated in the 68th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, Nigeria.
The high-level summit brought together leaders from across the West African sub-region to deliberate on key political, economic, and security issues shaping the future of the Community. A major highlight of the session was a Special Debate on the Future of ECOWAS, during which Heads of State exchanged views on strengthening regional cooperation and repositioning the bloc to respond effectively to emerging regional and global challenges.
Ghana’s delegation to the ECOWAS meetings was led by President Mahama, with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, MP, participating in all three statutory meetings. The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, also participated in deliberations at the level of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council.
Discussions at the summit focused on critical regional priorities, including the promotion of political stability, the strengthening of collective security mechanisms, and the deepening of economic integration among Member States. Leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to peace, democratic governance, and sustainable development across the sub-region.
The Heads of State Summit marked the culmination of a series of statutory end-of-year ECOWAS meetings, beginning with the 55th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council on 9th December 2025, followed by the 95th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers held from 10th to 12th December 2025.
